Twilight

It is what it’s all about, right? Twilight: where all this began – a boy and a girl. Edward and Bella. I am feeling the Twi-vibe this week and felt like stretching some creative muscles. Twilight and Twilight FanFiction and this crazy world of truly amazing people from all over the globe have been my haven for the last year.

This post is for anyone who has ever said a kind word and made me smile.

Pistols and Petticoats

“
"You don't remember me, do you?" She asked, her voice like honey washing over him. It eased some of the tension in his shoulders and back, allowing him to breathe more easy. He didn't look up, but he could feel her gaze burning his skin.

"I know who you are, Isabella Swan." Of course he knew who she was. She was the brave pig-tailed girl he used to dream about as a young boy. She was the pretty teenager he had seen at the river, crying after the death of her mother from the same fever that took his parents. She was the beautiful woman he would look for, yet hide from, on his monthly visits into town. Of course he knew who Isabella Swan was.

With a chilling back drop of racial hatred and a disgraceful disregard for basic human rights a young woman faces the fists of her father on a daily basis. It is a life Isabella has come to know well, but it is no life at all. Her only hope for escape is to become the mistress of the wealthy and cruel Michael Newton who lords over the town of Deadwood as if he owns it.

Isabella knows that she could not bear such an existence and that his hands would be no gentler than her fathers and so she runs away in fear. She doesn’t get far as the perils of the journey become too much but a handsome stranger comes to her aid.

Edward, son to a white father and an Indian mother, is a social outcast; feared and shunned. He is forced to live a solitary existence forging his livelihood in the lonely outback. His life is predictable, offering no meaning other than respecting the memory of his beloved parents whose love he must now live without.

He cannot bear to see her suffering and does everything in his power to gain her freedom and take her away from her dreadful life. With an impromptu marriage and a strained beginning to their life together, they both find more than they had bargained for. With the first hint of kindness that either has experienced in many a year, they cross racial lines and find solace in each other. Gentle hands and gentle words are gentle, no matter their origin. Love doesn’t have a colour and Bella isn’t bound by the ignorance of those around her.

“
Edward slowly lowered himself beside Isabella, relaxing into the soft mattress beneath him, glad to no longer be on the hard, cold floor…  Stretching, Edward froze as his foot brushed Isabella's bare leg under the blankets, and the situation suddenly became clear in his mind. He was in a bed, beside Isabella, and she was only wearing a night shirt. He hadn't thought of the implications when he accepted her offer to share.
Both of them lay beside each other, stiff as boards, shoulders touching, as the sound of their breathing filled the silent bedroom.

"Good night," Isabella whispered.

"Mmm hmmm," Edward affirmed, tightening his hands into fists, fighting the urge to reach out and pull her into his embrace, to bury his face in her hair, to kiss her until they were both left breathless, to truly claim her as his.

Edward lay awake for a long time after Isabella succumbed to sleep. It was like his body was connected to hers, every breathy moan, every shift of her sleeping body made Edward's stomach tighten. He was a coiled spring just waiting to break.

However, Mr Newton is not accustomed to the word ‘no’ and the couple must fight for their happiness. Is their love enough the give them the strength that they'll need? When life is cruel, you can find safety in love.

Last Tango in Forks

Last Tango in Forks begins with a nameless tryst and a moment of insatiable need. An anti-hero, crippled by an emotional turmoil he can’t face, reaches out to feel something other than pain and emptiness. An unassuming and caring girl seeks an excitement sorely lacking in her dreary life, taking the opportunity to ease her stranger’s hurt.

“
She blushed deeply, once again unable to look away from him. He simply stared back at her, and when he blinked again she saw a fresh set of tears slide down his cheeks…

"Are you alright?" After what felt like minutes he shook his head slowly. "It's just that... I would feel terrible if I left here and didn't at least try to help… Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes," he choked out.

"What can I do?"

He moved then, slowly walking towards her like a wildcat stalking its prey. The closer he got to her, the more she could feel something growing and tingling, as if an electric current was shooting between their bodies. He didn't stop until he was right in front of her with his arms on each side of the window, effectively caging her in. He even smells beautiful.

He looked deep into her eyes for almost a minute, allowing the electricity to build between them to a breaking point.

"You can let me fuck you," he whispered.

They find a passion in each other that they never knew could exist. As they keep their meetings secret, not even sharing their names, they actually come to share much much more – parts of themselves they wanted no one to see. But when reality beckons and threatens to disturb their delicate balance, can they still be what they were before –before faces had names, before souls had pasts, before the outside world crept in?

 ~

“
"But... don't you even want to know my name?" Bella asked, a slightly bewildered tone in her voice.

"No!" he snapped. "And I'm sure as hell not going to tell you mine." After a moment his tone softened and he continued. "That's for the outside world, with all the walls we've built around ourselves. There's no place for that shit here.

"We're going to meet here and it's going to be real... no bullshit pretenses. We're going to say what we want and do as we like." He leaned down to kiss her lips again before pulling away and smiling. "Putting a name on things only gives it limitations... expectations. I don't want any of that. I just want your body... and your soul. Your true soul that you hide away from the rest of the world, buried behind your name.”

Branching Inward

I’ve recently started reading Branching Inward by LifeInTheSnow, strongly recommended to me by songster and Emmanuelle Nathan for which I am very grateful – thank you, ladies.

Set in the fictional Midwestern college town of Newcoven, Branching Inward tells Bella’s story as she moves to a new town, a new job and as it turns out a whole new life. She goes in search of a new beginning and it looks like she will find what she has been missing in life.

Edward, a talented artist, has lost his true self. He is a brilliant but tortured soul weighed down by his past. Punishing himself, Edward has isolated himself from society, even from his family. Will he be strong enough to stay away from Bella?

Both Bella and Edward have their secrets and the intrigue builds as we get glimpses here and there of both of their pasts. As I’ve said in one review, the author, not only her characters, is quite the tease and builds the tension between her protagonists so well. UST abounds and I can quite safely say that once you’ve read it you’ll never think of honey in the same way again…

LifeInTheSnow’s writing is beautiful; descriptive, with excellent character development and mature emotional interactions. Canon phrases are worked in seemingly effortlessly, not merely as a nod to the Twilight prose, but in a way that owns them as part of this story in a way that makes me smile.

Branching Inward has one of the most sensual kisses that I’ve read and is worth a read for that alone, but in reality it offers so much more. To give you an idea what is in store for you:

“
“He was at the bottom of the stairs and I was a few steps above him when he spun back as if remembering something. His face was suddenly inches from mine, eye level with me.

“Bella, one more thing...” He met my eyes, smirking inexplicably, because honestly everything about this person was inexplicable, I decided. His voice was quiet and deep, warmed by the hot tea, hanging thickly in the air between us. He continued, dragging his gaze across my face, "I was wondering...why do you have my picture on the wall in your office?"

The room around me froze and disappeared from my conscious mind. It was like I had tunnel vision blinding me to everything but his mossy, soft eyes.

His question rang in my ears. Oh my god. What must he think of me? Has he had that in his head all night, this whole time? Of course he had. I hardly knew how to respond.

As it turned out, I didn't need to. Not in any sort of usual way. I realized that Edward's face was still unnervingly close to mine, and he was making no effort to move away. And his eyes were alive with fierce energy. And I was bolted to this spot, an unfamiliar heat scorching every nerve from within. And I realized...he was going to kiss me.”

Find Branching Inward on FanFiction.Net http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6372008/1/. Go now, you won’t regret it. It is a work in progress, currently with fourteen chapters.

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope that 2011 holds everything that you hope for.

This Buried Life

But often, in the world's most crowded streets,
But often, in the din of strife,
There rises an unspeakable desire
After the knowledge of our buried life;
A thirst to spend our fire and restless force
In tracking out our true, original course;
A longing to inquire
Into the mystery of this heart which beats
So wild, so deep in us - to know
Whence our lives come and where they go
.
The Buried Life by Matthew Arnold

This Buried Life by Emmanuelle Nathan tells the tale of an American Bella who has escaped an oppressive relationship to start anew in the UK. She has embraced the change and has a successful career working for The British Museum in London. But life is bland and memories of her ex have followed her, holding her back and knocking her confidence. Bella’s character although brave and intelligent, smacks of a life unlived; a lonely existence with a public facade hiding the fire within.

A golden-eyed stranger ignites a passion that even Bella didn’t know she was capable of.  A sexual awakening is on the cards that sees Bella wanton and frenzied under his attentions and demands. Bella’s simple existence is no more and what will happen when this mysterious stranger interferes with the one part of her life she has confidence in – her career? I guess we’ll find out…

I can’t wait by the way ;)

A Pound of Flesh

"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."
Maria Robinson

A Pound of Flesh, written by jaxon22, was recommended to me recently by some of my twitter friends who told me that I simply had to read it and I am more than glad that I took their advice.

Isabella is a teacher intent on giving back to the community, driven by memories of her admirable father. Her determination takes her to the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility in New York. Her journey to give back may cause her to give more than she ever bargained for.

Edward, the bad boy incarnate, is an inmate at Arthur Kill. He’s angry and full of hate for a world that has let him down. He has walls around his heart more impenetrable than the prison walls around him but Isabella won a place there fifteen years ago in exceptional circumstances – he just needs to see her for who she really is.

Edward and Bella are at first impassioned in their prejudice and frustrated by their unwanted mutual sexual attraction. They are more alike than they realise however, each carry a weight that has dictated their lives, even if it has driven them in different directions – both have their debt to pay.

jaxon22 has created an intricate plot with intelligent emotional insight woven with interesting literary discussions and greater moral life lessons. This is truly a captivating read. I am not doing it justice (no pun intended) go check it out and see for yourself at
